Interviewing whilst in lockdown

If you find yourself job hunting during the lockdown, the likelihood is you'll need to use an online platform such as Skype or Zoom.

Here are a few tips:

  1. Make sure you are smart - dress just as you would be if you were going for a face-to-face interview.
  2. Make sure the light is behind your computer screen, not behind you (else you'll be a shadow).
  3. Try to raise up your camera device above normal desk height. If you simply use a laptop at your desk, for example, the panel will get more of a view of your chin(s) than you or they might like.
  4. Think about your background. It is likely that there will be some facility in your chosen package to blur out the background. This will look professional and have the advantage of forcing the focus onto you. [In Skype right-click anywhere on the video window and choose to blur.]
  5. Skype gives you one huge advantage - you can use notes. Try having some key points that you've prepared either up to the right or up to the left of your screen. When asked a difficult question, you can look up and away quite naturally as if thinking to yourself before responding. It won't be obvious to anyone on the other end of the call what you've been able to do.
